Italy-Switzerland Bilateral Meeting

5 May 2017 – Italy-Switzerland Bilateral Meeting on Infrastructures and Transport, was held at the premises of the Ministry of Infrastructures and Transport, at Porta Pia, in Rome,   this afternoon, between Minister Graziano Delrio and the President of the Swiss Confederation, Doris Leuthard.

The Minister and the President, who also holds the office of Swiss Minister of Transport, focused on the Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2012, expressing their satisfaction for the positive steps forward taken, in particular, in the implementation of the Rhine-Alpine Corridor’s rail transport, as well as in the navigation services on Lake Maggiore and in the cabotage sector.  

Minister Delrio expressed his congratulations to President Leuthard for her recent election.

More in detail, he stressed that the connection projects with the Gotthard Base Tunnel have been speeded up, confirming that it will be possible to cross the Luino and Chiasso Passes within 2020, by loading semitrailers having 4 meters of height on trains.

In December 2017 it will also be inaugurated the New Stabio-Arcisate Railway Line across the border, as well as carrying out new connection services between Milan Malpensa Airport and Lugano in order to increase the interested airport area. Furthermore, a rail connection between Varese and Como, via Switzerland, will be implemented for the benefit of Lombard and cross-border mobility.

All the projects provided for in the MoU, are fully covered by funding and will be completed by 2020. All those projects on technological improvement of ERTMS signaling system, as well as intermodal investment plan have also been recalled.  

Projects on connection lines with Genoa Sea-Port have also been planned and as for the Terzo Valico Project, Minister Delrio has underlined the delivery of the fourth construction contract -  for a total value estimated at about 1 billion and 630 million euros, carried out by RFI and Cociv.
